InterestedThe entire island of Dominica is a spa. Let us start there. So while there are wellness attractions, accommodations and experiences to be had in Dominica, we had to include the island itself as its own wellness attraction. If nature heals, then the “nature-isle of the Caribbean” starts doing the job of rebalancing you, the moment you step off the plane and realize you are in a runway in a rainforest. While other islands boasts over 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, Dominica boasts the same number of rivers and waterfalls. If you find the sound of running water healing, the auditory therapy begins as you drive to your residence, across river after river, fringed by the lushed rainforest. The island is so wet and green, you feel like you too are being refreshed and fertilized. Natural hot springs, natural cold springs provide therapy just off the side of the road. Fruit trees bend over generously proffering you nourishment. Welcome to the island of wellness.
This truly was accommodation that is perfect as a home base for a wellness experience in the North East of Dominica. The location at Pointe Cassé is not only secluded and nestled at the base of Trois Piton but it puts you in the vicinity of several waterfalls, nature trails and the Kalinago Barana Aute experience. The property is bespoke and full of vibrant art with compelling stories. If you are there while the owner and host Carla Armour is on island, what a treat is in store for you! You will be regaled by her knowledge and her personal hospitality. As a Pilates instructor and life coach, she engages with her guests in a very inspirational way. The vegan and vegetarian (she will also do pescatarian by request) meals are healthy and use the local produce in creative ways. She loves to showcase the locally manufactured products such as Sister Nat’s delectable sauces, dressings and marinades. She is also very knowledgeable and well connected to other wellness providers and can provide a wide range of options for you.

Before taking this hike for a wellness experience, ensure that adventure and overcoming your own fears and discomfort are part of the wellness experience for you. This is not an easy hike, even when the trail has been well-maintained the weather sunny. Heavy duty hiking shoes, long trousers and long sleeved shirts are recommended because razor grass is unforgiving and very painful. However, you will have with you the calm, patient and very helpful Kalinago guide with you who will put safety first and challenge you to overcome your fears while sharing bushcraft and history. Walk the path carved by the Maroons (enslaved Africans who escaped the plantations) through the trail and connect with them. A refreshing river bath and the spectacular Emerald Falls will serve as the climax of your hike.

Located along the main road to the Emerald falls is a roadside fruit and vegetable stall owned by Ronald Mellow called “The Farmacy”. It is a great rest stop for visitors and we saw a lot of visitors stopping by for fresh fruit, smoothies and other ital and locally produced food and herbs, including the kinds for aphrodisiac and higher consciousness effects. It is a cultural mainstay and iconic with an underground pop-culture following. We highly recommend including it within a wider itinerary as a breather between other main events happening in the Eastern part of the island.

With care and lots of andectodal examples he delivers knowledge on the medicinal and nutritional value of each of the herbs. Guests sit on benches or can gather around the table. You are allowed to touch, smell and taste some of the plants and fruits. Light refreshments are served, made from some of the very plants, herbs and fruits you were introduced to. He is a gentle and patient soul and happily answers questions. This is a perfect morning time activity to kick start a day of Wellness

Mr. O’Neill enjoys several stellar reviews on Trip Advisor and is described as a repository of historical and botany knowledge. He will picked you up in his safari styled truck early in the morning and give you an overall lay of the island, its notable features, history and most important attractions. However the real wellness experience begins when you arrive at St. Kitts Forest Reserve before the busloads of cruise ship tourists and zipliners invade. There is nothing but the song of birds and rainforest sounds to give you a truly secluded experience. Mr. O’Neill will take you deeper where the more healing energy radiates. He has endless stories and ethnopharmacological knowledge of all the plants around. The walk is not too strenuous and there are plenty chances to stop and be still. A wonderful start to a day of wellness.
